AdminA few years ago, Bugatti stunned the automotive world by breaking the 300-mph barrier with a modified version of its eponymous Chiron. Now, the French company is back with a new version that takes its supercar to an even greater level of speed and style.
The aptly named Super Sport 300+ is powered by the same quad-turbo, 8.0-liter W16 engine as its more civilized counterpart, with the big difference being that it’s capable of going 7% faster. That’s not a trivial amount of extra pace, especially as the record-setting Chiron had to run with a limiter affixed in order to achieve its feat.
For those who’d like to experience the full impact of that power, the Triple F Collection, which is an online group that collects supercars and shows them in action, recently put a Super Sport 300+ through its paces. In a video that you can check out below, the car is shown being driven by Andy Wallace on the company’s Ehra-Lessien test track in Germany.
Despite its insane top speed, the Super Sport is still a comfortable car to drive, and that’s partly because of its rear-wheel-drive layout. Its long-tail design helps to minimize drag, and the tires (new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s that can “consistently drive at up to 500km/h” or 311 mph) are also designed to handle such speeds.
With the exception of the squat front end, the Super Sport is a lot more svelte than the regular Chiron and features a unique set of wheels that are designed to reduce unsprung weight and balance the car better. This, combined with the more relaxed driving position and lighter interior, makes for a surprisingly pleasant car to ride in.
But the real reason to have a Super Sport is its performance. As the industry collectively marches towards electrification, it’s amazing that the Super Sport is able to reach such absurd levels of performance with a conventional internal-combustion engine. The fact that it does so with such elegance is a testament to the engineering prowess of the men and women behind it.
Of course, money can’t buy more time on this planet, but it can certainly buy you a Super Sport. And that’s a damn good way to cram some of life’s experiences into a short amount of time.
