AdminFiles are an essential part of any modern business, whether you’re storing and sharing your data or sending images to clients. But how do you get those files from point A to point B? The answer: Uploading.
Uploading involves transferring files from one device to another, usually via the internet. This can be done by using a web browser, FTP client or terminal (SCP/SFTP). When talking about moving files between distributed clients, it’s often called file sharing instead.
There are many types of files that need to be uploaded, from photos and documents to videos and audio. Some files, like lengthy PDFs with lots of pictures and uncompressed audio files, can be very large. These can be difficult to send via email or FTP and may exceed the limits of some websites. To solve this, the easiest option is to use a cloud-based file-sharing platform.
A typical website has a special upload button, which will open a dialog box that allows users to select the file from their computer. Once the file is selected, it will begin to transfer to the host server and a progress bar will appear on the page. If the upload process is interrupted, it will resume when the user reconnects to a stable network connection. Some platforms, like Dropbox, allow users to drag & drop files directly onto the website.
The uploading process can take a while, depending on the size of the file and the connection speed. This is why many online platforms offer users the option to resume or cancel their upload at any time. Users can also see the status of their uploads by going to More > Activity in the main menu. This will display all active imports and uploads, including how long each has been running.
Once an upload has finished, a notification will appear on the Upload Overview page and the uploaded files will become available for use within the system. Any incomplete uploads can be closed by selecting ‘Complete Upload’. Any files that were added prior to closing the upload will remain visible on the Upload Overview page, as ‘Incomplete’.
Uploading files is a crucial process in getting data from your clients into the system. By offering your clients multiple ways to upload their data, you can ensure that they’re always able to submit their files regardless of how they’re connected to the internet. This not only increases your upload success rate but also makes it easier for your users to keep track of all their assets.
