Explosion Proof Actuators
Whether used to automate a quarter turn ball valve or a multileaf damper, explosion proof electric actuators offer command and control of industrial valves and dampers. They can open, close, or regulate a flow more intensively and precisely. Unlike pneumatic actuators, they have no moving parts and therefore cannot produce electrical sparks or hot surfaces that may ignite combustible compounds around them.
Instead, explosion proof equipment uses complex designs to prevent sparks from reaching flammable gases in an external, applicable environment. This is accomplished by sealing off the internal components and ensuring that any sparks do not interact with combustible materials in the surrounding area. This can be done by limiting the number of potential spark-generating elements, such as screws and gears, within the device, or by preventing them from making contact with the hazardous airstreams.
While avoiding sparks is the primary focus of most equipment designed for use in hazardous environments, it is impossible to completely eliminate them. That is why most explosion proof equipment also contains fail-safe mechanisms that revert the unit to a safe position when an explosive atmosphere is detected.
